Recently, the European Commission published the public consultation for amendments in 2009/48/EC of lead content limits. The public consultation will be open from Feb 13, 2012 to May 7, 2012. The new toy safety directive 2009/48/EC introduced strict migration limits for lead in toys. These limits are based on the assumption that exposure of children to chemicals may not exceed a certain level, called "Tolerable Daily Intake"(TDI). Since children are exposed to lead via other sources than toys, only a percentage of the TDI should be allocated to toys. The limits can be divided into three distinct regions (in addition to modeling clay, Finger paints).
The Directive foresees the possibility to amend the above mentioned
limits when new scientific evidence is made available, to ensure appropriate
protection for children. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommended
reducing the lead exposure from both food and non foods products as
it appears that the smallest intake of lead can have a critical effect
