CEN Published New Edition EN 71-2:2020+A1:2025 Safety of toys - Part 2: Flammability

On June 11, 2025, European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published EN 71-2:2020+A1:2025, the new edition toy safety standard for Flammability. This standard is expected to be harmonized before June 2026 under Directive 2009/48/EC Toy Safety Directive (TSD), upon official acceptance by the European Commission (EC) and by publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).

The main changes to the previous edition EN 71-2:2020 are as follows:
--Inclusion of definitions in 3.3, 3.10 and 3.15 for cosmetic kit, gustative game and olfactory board game to support clarification at 4.1.
--Clarification regarding highly flammable and flammable liquids in chemical toy(s) in 4.1 and alignment with EN 71-5:2015 and EN 71-13:2021+A1:2022.
--Clarification on how to test masks in 5.3 to ensure test flame is not affected by openings.
--Update the range of allowable water hardness in 5.4.1.1 c).
--Improvements to Figure 1 and associated text in 5.4.1.2.1.
--Correction some editing error and Annex information updates.

In addition, some clauses were edited to align with ISO 8124-2:2023 without technical change
