EU Launched Public Consultation on the Preliminary Opinion on Chromium VI in Toys

The European Commission and the Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER) have launched a public consultation on the preliminary opinion on chromium VI in toys on August 1, 2014. All interested parties are invited to submit written comments on the preliminary opinion by September 28, 2014.

The aim of the opinion is to consider whether a revision of the migration limits for chromium VI under Toy Safety Directive (2009/48/EC), is necessary in view of new available evidence, in particular, with regard to potential carcinogenic effects of chromium VI.

SCHER recommends that for children, any additional exposure to chromium VI from toys should be reduced to the lowest levels achievable.

Proposed migration limit values for chromium VI: :

	Migration Limit for Chromium VI (mg/kg)
	Category I: dry, powder like or pliable toy material	Category II : liquid or sticky	Category III: scrapped-off toy material
Current limit under Toy safety directive	0.02	0.005	0.2
