EN71-3:2013 was Published by CEN

EN 71-3:2013 was published by CEN on 5 June 2013. It will be a harmonsied standard for EU toy directive after the new version publish in the Official Journal of the European Union. This step is not done yet. It is expected that the EU will harmonise the EN 71-3:2013 before the coming into force of the chemical requirements in the EU Toy Directive 2009/48/EC on 20 July 2013.

The main changes of EN71-3:2013 are as follows:
• Toy materials are now divided into three categories. Migration limits of three categories are different.
A Category I - Dry, brittle, powder-like or pliable materials
B Category II - Liquid or sticky materials
C Category III - Scraped-off materials
• The new version now includes 19 elements.
• Barium migration limits have been reduced however the Barium limits in the TSD have not been formally changed as this is still under administrative processing.
• The large analytical correction factor applied has been deleted.
