EU Planned Amendment of Migration Limits in Ceramic Food Contact Articles

Recently, the EU Commission has published a draft Regulation to amendment of the migration limits in ceramic food contact articles. In these ceramic articles, the migration of lead and cadmium is regulated according to Directive 84/500 EEC. The new draft Regulation would supersede Directive 84/500 EEC and its amendment Directive 2005/31/EC on food contact ceramics and set new limits for the migration of lead and cadmium. The proposed limits of these two elements are as below.

Comparison of current and proposed limits:

Metal Limit Category 1: Articles which cannot be filled and articles which can be filled, the internal depth of which, measured from the lowest point to the horizontal plane passing through the upper rim, does not exceed 25mm Category 2:
All other articles which can be filled
Category 3: Cooking ware; packaging and storage vessels having a capacity of more than three litres
Cadmium Current limit 0.07 mg/ dm2 0.3 mg/L 0.1 mg/L
Proposed limit 0.001 mg/ dm2 0.005 mg/L 0.0019 mg/L
Lead Current limit 0.8 mg/ dm2 4.0 mg/L 1.5 mg/L
Proposed limit 0.002 mg/dm2 0.01 mg/L 0.0038 mg/L

      Note:
mg/dm2 = milligram per square decimeter
         mg/L = milligram per litre
